What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle. It’s like the car’s fingerprint. It can help confirm the make, model, year, and other identifying details.

Why do a VIN check before buying?

  • • Confirm the vehicle you’re inspecting matches the listing
  • • Reduce risk before paying a deposit
  • • Spot problems early and negotiate with confidence
  • • Avoid costly surprises after purchase

How to use SDRIVE for a VIN check

  1. 1) Go to the homepage and select VIN Search.
  2. 2) Enter the full 17-character VIN.
  3. 3) Preview the vehicle details returned.
  4. 4) Unlock the full report if you need deeper checks (stolen / written-off / finance, etc.).

VIN check vs Rego check

A VIN check uses the vehicle’s unique VIN. A rego check uses the number plate and state. If you only have a plate, use the rego check page. If you have the VIN (best), use VIN search for accuracy.

Tip: VINs are usually found on the compliance plate, registration papers, or near the windscreen on the driver’s side.
